The Baobao Festival is a combination of activities stemming from the ideas of"you baibing"(travel a hundred diseases) and "la baobao"(drag Baobao).

"You baibing,"also referred to as "you maobing" and "ta qing"(hike), happens on January 16, according to the lunar calendar. The main activity is travel; citizens go out to the country and the peasants to the city. It was believed that this is a way to get rid of diseases.

La baobao's purpose is to find a "gandie" (godfather) for the children. It is based on the birthday and birth time of the children. People believe the gandie can protect the children from diseases and disasters. This tradition came up in the time of Qianlong, during the Qing Dynasty, and has a history of nearly 300 years.
