Hefei is located on the north bank of the Yangtze River, and is the capital of Anhui province.

Hefei has a history of more than 2,000 years. It is known for its ancient culture, traditional architecture, Three Kingdoms, and Ming Dynasty history. Because of its strategic military position, it was the battleground of many wars in the ancient past. The city got its name of Hefei (merge of Fei) because the South Fei River and the West Fei River merge here.

Although you can visit Hefei year-around, the best time is from April to October. Hefei has a sub-tropical monsoon climate with distinct four seasons, mild climate, and ample sunshine. The average annual temperature is 15.7°C. January sees the coldest weather with an average temperature of 2.4°C, and July is the hottest with an average temperature of 28.4°C. Average annual rainfall is about 1000 mm, with more rain seen when season changes from summer to autumn. There are an average of 228 frost-free days with annual average relative humidity of 77%.

[edit] By Air

Hefei Luogang Airport, located 12 km south of the city center, is a large modern airport. It offers domestic flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Haikou, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Qingdao, Dalian, Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin, Chengdu, Xi'an, Nanyang, Wenzhou, Anqing, Fuyang, and Huangshan. It also has scheduled flights to Hong Kong. The airport can be reached through bus line 11 from the city.

The dual-track north-south running Huainan Railway goes through Hefei, reaching north to Bengbu (which connects the Beijing-Shanghai Railway and the Longhai Railway), and south to Wuhu (which connects the Anhui-Jiangxi Railway, Nanjing-Wuhu Railway, and Xuancheng-Hangzhou Railway). The planned Ningxi (Nanjing-Xi'an) Railway, the second east-west route parallel to the Longhai Railway, will also go through Hefei when it's completed.

Hefei New Train Station is the largest train transportation hub in Anhui Province. From here there are trains going to Beijing (West), Shanghai, Ningbo, Hankou, Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Shangqiu, Shenzhen, as well as other smaller cities inside Anhui Province such as Bengbu, Huaibei, Bozhou, Huangshan. The train service inquiry line is 551-2847937.

In addition, Hefei is also served by Hefei West Train Station, located at the west end of Wangjiang Road (望江路), which can be reached by bus line #111. There are daily trains to Nanchang. Also Shanghai-Anqing, Hefei-Anqing, and Hefei-Shenzhen West trains all stop at this station. The train service inquiry line for Hefei West Train Station is 551-5571833.

The fast trains take about 10 hours to Beijing, 1 hour to Nanjing and 3.5 hours to Shanghai.

There are 3 major passenger bus stations in Hefei: Hefei Central Station, Hefei West Station, and Hefei Jinhu Station.

National Highway 312 and 206 meet at Hefei. Buses from here run to 13 cities and 42 counties in Anhui Province. The recently opened Hefei-Nanjing Highway, Hefei-Wuhu Highway, Hefei-Bengbu Highway, greatly help Hefei connect to other cities in the Shanghai-Nanjing-Hangzhou area and cities in the Yangtze River reaches.

Hefei is served by more than 100 city bus lines. Fares are generally one RMB. All scenic spots in the urban area can be reached through public buses.

The taxi fare is 6 RMB for the first 2.5 km (7.2 RMB for the first 2.5 km during the night time, from 11pm t0 5am). It costs 1 RMB (1.2 RMB for night time service) for each additional km to ride a Xiali (a low-end type of taxi); and 1.2 RMB (1.44 RMB for night time service) for each additional km to ride the Shanghai Santana or Fukang.

Well-known attractions include Baogong Temple (包公祠) - built in 1066 near the tomb of Lord Bao, Zipengshan National Forest Park (紫蓬山国家森林公园) - a reserved National Park known for its flat and smooth main peak, Leisure Ford (古逍遥津) - a public park sitting on the famous ancient battlefield of the Battle of Hefei.
