Hohhot (zh:呼和浩特), meaning "the Green City" in the Mongolian language, is the capital and the administrative, economic and cultural center in Inner Mongolia.
Covering a total area of 17224 km² including 2054 km² of urban area, Hohhot is inhabited by the 36 ethnic groups for a total population of 2.58 million including 1.5 million in the urban area. Among the notable ones are Mongolian, Han, Hui, Manchu, Korean, Daur, and Oroqen ethnic groups.
Under its administration, Hohhot has 4 districts, 4 counties, 1 banner and 1 national level Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Hohhot is a renown historical and cultural city in China and one of the origins of the Chinese civilization.
The famous historical sites include the relics of "Dayao Culture" indicating human activities of 500,000 years ago, the Ancient City of Yunzhong of the period of Warring States, Zhaojun Mausoleum evidencing the marriage between the princess of the Western Dynasty and the chief of the Xiongnu, Huayan Scripture Tower of the Liao Dynasty, and the Dazhao Temple, Xilituzhao Temple and Five-Pagoda Temple of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The city has been an important cultural center of the region throughout its long history.

[edit] By Air
Hohhot Airport (白塔机场) is located about 15 km to the northeast to the city center. It has over 40 air routes to the various major domestic cities and 2 direct ones leading to Mongolia and Russia.

Beijing-Baotou Railway passes Hohhot, which also originates several trains, including the ones to Beijing, Tongliao, Lanzhou, Wuhai, Erlianhot, Dongsheng. In addition, it has international trains going to Ulan Bator on every Wednesday and Thursday.

Hohhot-Baotou expressway is now open, and all counties and banners (including many farming and pastoral areas) can be reached through bus. There are dozens of long-distance passenger buses going to nearby cities and towns from Hohhot.
There are also six passenger bus routes to Mongolia, and some bordering provinces in Russia.

Visitors can use a number of bus lines leading to the different areas in the city. Bus line #1 goes from the train station to the old town area. Bus line #7 goes from the train station to the new town area.

Thousands of taxis take visitors to many public places as well as small streets throughout the city during day and night times.

- Zhaojun Mausoleum (zh:昭君墓): Located about 9 kilometers to the south of the city. It is said to be the resting place of Wang Zhaojun, a princess from the China's Han Dynasty who married a Xiongnu chief, Chanyu.
- Five-Pagoda Temple (zh:五塔寺): Hosts more than 1,500 figures of Buddha. It was constructed in 1732 following Indian temples' architecture.
- Xilamuren Grassland (zh:希拉穆仁草原): 80km northwest of Hohhot
- Gegentala Grassland (zh:格根塔拉草原): 170km northeast of Hohhot
- Huitengxile Grassland (zh:灰腾锡勒草原): 120km west of Hohhot
- Xilituzhao Palace (zh:席力图召):
- Dazhao Temple (zh:大召寺): Completed in 1579 during the Ming Dynasty as the oldest Lamaist Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia.
- Inner Mongolia Museum: dinosaur fossils, historical artifacts of nomadic peoples, etc.
