Lying at the foot of Purple Mountain in the east surburb of Nanjing, the Ming Tomb is a joint burial tomb of the first Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang and Empress Ma of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Ming Tomb is one of the largest imperial tombs in China with a history of more than 600 years.

The Ming Tomb was started to construct in 1381 and was completed in 1431. The tomb's Chinese name is Ming Xiaoling (zh:明孝陵), named after Queen Ma, who was bestowed the title of 'Queen of Xiao Ci', meaning 'Queen of Filial Piety and Kindness'. Queen Ma died in 1384 and was buried at the tomb.
