Located at the estuary of the Yangtze River, Nantong enjoys a reputation of "a pearl alongside the Yangtze River and East Sea" and "the primary window showcasing the prosperity of the Yangtze River Delta."

Nantong is located in the warm and wet monsoon subtropical region, and therefore experiences four distinct seasons. It now governs 4 county-level cities (Rugao, Tongzhou, Haimen, and Qidong), 2 counties (Hai'an and Rudong), 2 districts (Chongchuan and Gangzha), as well as the state-level Nantong Economic and Technological Development Zone.

The Hao River runs through Nantong. Along its banks are the Nantong Museum, Taofen Memorial Park, Shenshou Art Museum, Zhaodan Pavilion and Geyi Art Center. Modern buildings sit beside traditional architecture, showcasing the city's rich historical culture.

Langshan Hill, the tallest of five hills in the area, is to the south of the city. From its summit one can see the Yangtze River expand towards the horizon.

The beauty surrounding Langshan hill has long been the subject of poems and literature. Couplets and ancient poems written by famous writers can be found on pillars and stones in the scenic area.

  • Taro

Taro, literally meaning "the fragrant tuber crop" in Chinese, is named for the light fragrance given off by its under-ground tuber.

A couple popular preparations of Taro are diced chicken with taro in soybean sauce and taro braised with diced brown soybean cakes.

  • Chao-style Rice Cake

The Chao-style rice cake, first created in the Qing Dynasty, is soft, sweet and savory and often served with sweet preserved osmanthus or red bean paste filling.

  • Canned Anchovy

Anchovy, favored by locals for its smooth and delicate flavour, is now canned, sold and shared with people from all over the world.

  • Ru-gao Sausage

Ru-gao sausage is the northern counterpart of the well-liked Cantonese style sausage. A typical Ru-gao sausage is moderate in taste and mild in flavor.

  • Seaweed and Clams

Nantong is the largest breeding and export base for seaweed and clams in China.
