Shaoxing is located to the south of Yangtze River Delta, and in the northern part of Zhejiang Province. The city covers an area of 8256 sq km with a population of 4,340,000, of which the urban area occupies an area of 339 sq km with a population of 640,000.
Shaoxing has a long history with numerous accomplished scholars and celebrities, such as Yu the Great (大禹) in ancient China, Wang Xizhi (王羲之), Lu You (陸游) and the famous modern writer Lu Xun (鲁迅).
Shaoxing is known as a water town, a wine town, and a town of calligraphy. It was designated as one of the first national-level historical and cultural cities, and one of the outstanding tourist cities in China.
Shaoxing attracts many tourists every year due to its beautiful natural water-themed scenery, its numerous green hills, and many cultural relics like the Yu the Great Mausoleum and residences of celebrities in Chinese history. Visitors especially like its leisurely and peaceful atmosphere due to its less sophistication than some modern metropolis.

Shaoxing was the capital of Yue State during the Spring and Autumn Period. It became a subprefecture during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was a county under the Republic of China, and became a city of modern China after 1949.
Shaoxing local operas have played a key role in the history of Chinese opera history. Excellent playwrights and performing artists have come from Shaoxin's long opera tradition, contributing in great ways to Shaoxin's culture.

Shaoxing has distinct four seasons.
- Best time to visit:
- April and May: Wuxie (五泄) is the most beautiful place for its natural scenery. During the rainy season, the sudden increase of water made the scenery especially charming. In addition, many traditional festivals such as Lanting International Calligraphy Festival (兰亭国际书法节), Heshan Peach Blossom Festival (吼山桃花节) and other well-known festivals are held at this time.
- October: Known as the golden autumn month after the waning hot summer, October sees dry and cool weather. Reknowned Shaoxing Rice-Wine Festival (绍兴黄酒节) and Hutang Osmanthus Festival (湖塘桂花节) are usually held during this season.
- Worst time to visit: July (hottest month) and January (coldest month).

The easiest way to get there is by plane via Xiaoshan International Airport (XIA), which is only about 30 km from Shaoxing. Then take a bus or cab to get into downtown in about 15 minutes.
- Airport shuttles run to Shaoxing with stops at Keqiao (柯桥).
- Shuttles departure time from the airport: 09:40 - 20: 00
- Shuttles departure time from Shaoxing: every hours between 08:30 and 18:30.
- Shuttle Terminal at Shaoxing: Shaoxing Dynasty Hotel (王朝大酒店)
- Stops: Keqiao (next to Jinghu Hotel), Shaoxing (at the entrance of Dynasty Hotel)
- Fare: 20 yuan to Keqiao, 30 yuan to Shaoxing.

Xiao-Yong Railway (Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway) runs through Shaoxing. It takes about 50 minutes to reach Hangzhou and 1 hour 40 minutes to Ningbo. All trains originated from Ningbo (except for Z trains) stop at Shaoxing station.
In Shaoxing Station, you can buy train tickets for trains leaving Hangzhou, and Shanghai for all different places in China.

There are 5 long-distance bus stations in Shaoxing: Central Passenger Station, East Station, West Station, South Station, and North Station. The fare for regular bus from Hangzhou East Station is 18 RMB, and stops at Keyan so that passengers can stop for sightseeing. High-speed non-stop bus from Hangzhou costs 22 RMB, running directly to Shaoxing Central Passenger Station.

- Lotus - in the north west of the downtown, a Thai cooperation's shopping center, offering variety of daily products with comprehensive prices.
- Trust-Mart - in the middle of the downtown, right beneath the center square underground, easy transportation.
- Buxing Road- in the south of the downtown, famous for its traditional Chinese small products like stamps, old money, pets and small hand made gifts.

Qianqing (钱清) A small town not far away from downtown of Shaoxing, bus 613 will directly lead you there, and it's famous for its cheap textile and cloth materials with nice quality.
