Southwest China (西南) includes Chongqing (重庆), Sichuan (四川), Guizhou (贵州), Tibet (西藏), and Yunnan (云南). This area is well known for its rugged terrain of mountains, hills and deep basins. It mainly has a subtropical climate. The area has a size of 2.35 million sq km, and supports a population of 180 million (as of 1990). Besides the Han Chinese, there are Tibetan, Yi, Dai, Bai, Zhuang, Miao and other ethnic minorities.

The area traditionally has a weak economy, and has been a relatively poor region. But the region has abundant resources, and has great potential in the area of tourism, hydropower, metallurgy, machinery, chemicals, and defense industry.
