Why are there no lawn, no trees inside the Forbidden City?

Just curious if anyone know why there are no lawn, no trees inside the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Did not the emperors and his royal family know they could live longer breathing clean and fresh air?

Or maybe there was no air pollution at that time?
