discounts on short-distance sleeper tickets are now being offered

Per Railway Administration of China, discounts on sleeper tickets for some short-distance trains are now being offered. The new policy will be valid until June 30, 2009.

However, discounts are not being offered to all sleeper tickets, and there are detailed restriction as below:
1. Discount is only available for vacant sleepers after 6pm.
2. Discounted price:

  • For distance less than 200km:
hard-sleeper: 170% of hard seat ticket; soft-sleeper: 270% of hard seat ticket
  • For distance between 200km and 400km:
hard-sleeper: 158% of hard seat ticket; soft-sleeper: 258% of hard seat ticket

In addition, the above discount is not available to tickets which have already discounted.

AS we may see, the new policy is really a promotion aiming to sell some unpopular (after 6pm & short-distance, less than 400km) vacant sleepers.
