from china to lao chai

hi, we would like to take the train from kunming to lao chai (vietnam). unfortunately, these trains are not running at the moment. my question, is there an other possibility to travel from kunming to the border than by overnight bus? is there a train going close and the rest can be done by taxi? can anybody help me?
