Tianshan Tianchi (zh:天山天池风景名胜区) is a scenic area named after the the namesake lake Tianchi, or literally "Heavenly Lake". The lake is located on the north side of Bogda Peak of Tianshan Mountains, about 110 km east of Urumqi. It's a natural lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks and sky-scraping dragon spruce fed by thawing snow runoffs.

Located at about 2,000 m above sea level, Tianchi runs 4.9 square km in area and 105 meters deep at the deepest point.

Tianshan Tianchi was originally named as Yaochi (Jade Lake), but was renamed to the current name in 1783 by then Urumqi governer Mingliang (乌鲁木齐都统明亮).

The scenic area is known for its mixed natural scenery of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, rivers and lakes, forests, prairies and wetlands, against a backdrop of a unique nomadic lifestyle.

There are two smaller lakes in addition to the main lake: East Little Lake and West Little Lake. East Little Lake, also called the Black Dragon Pond (黑龙潭) in ancient times, is located 500 meters to the east of Tianchi Lake. Legends says it was the bathing place of the Mother of the Western Skies. The East Little Lake is surrounded by fresh greenery and a waterfall in the far corner.

The West Little Lake is also called Jade Maid Pond (玉女潭), which legend has it was the footbath of the Mother of the Western Skies. The story goes that she used to invite other immortals around the lake to celebrate the blossoming of the local peach tree. The West Little Lake shapes like a full moon. At the side of the pond is another 20-meter high waterfall. From distance, it looks like a silver curtain. The stunning scenery includes natural grasses, trees and flowers and moss covered boulders lapped by the river's frothing water.

Tianchi is located 110km to the southeast of Urumqi.

There are buses running to the entrance to the park. Then there are funicular to the lake, or take one hour walk trip to enjoy the the spectacular views.
